September's Newsletter

Welcome
Welcome to Cub Scouts and Pack 407. We are excited to start another of scouting and fun.  If you are returning scout families, welcome back!  If you are new to our pack or to scouting, we look forward to getting to know you and helping you get to know our program.

Newsletters
Each month at Pack Meeting, you will receive a newsletter. The newsletter is the primary communication from the pack to families. In it, you will find upcoming dates, event information, fundraiser details, feedback on past events, and contact information.  The newsletter is also posted on our blog: cubscoutpack407.blogspot.com.  We want all of our families to be informed and feel connected.  If you miss a pack meeting, forget to pick up a newsletter, or lose your newsletter you can get the information from the newsletter by visiting the blog, or calling/emailing your den leader.

Den Meetings
Den meetings are age-specific meetings usually held twice a month. The den leader, with the parents, arranges the meeting time and place. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the den meetings as these are an important part of your scout’s scouting experience. Some dens rotate the planning of den meetings among the parents. This gives scouts the opportunity to be taught in a variety of styles and it eases the workload of the den leader. If you have not been contacted by your den leader please call Jill.

Uniforms
Jill has one used scout shirt available for purchase. The cost is the cost she paid (usually less than $5). The shirts need to be dry-cleaned to remove patches that have been put on with an iron-on adhesive (dry-cleaning dissolves the adhesive). Stayton Cleaners charges $5 to dry-clean shirts.

Monthly Dues & Event Fees
Look for the Treasure’s table at Pack Meeting. To help ensure accurate tracking of turned-in money, most of our payment deadlines will be at Pack Meeting. Often our deadlines will be different than those set by the district, council or other event organizers. This is to help us make sure our records are accurate and registrations are turned in on time without late fees.

Monthly dues help pay for boys’ awards. Awards will be withheld until dues are paid. Dues must be back paid. Dues can be paid for the entire year in one lump sum ($135).

 Harvest Festival
Thank you to those who participated in the Harvest Festival fundraiser. You did a great job and represented the Pack and Cub Scouting very well. A big thank you to the owner of the Kid Zone equipment and the planners of the Harvest Festival for making this opportunity available.

Fundraiser
Our fall fundraiser is Trail’s End popcorn.  This fundraiser has proven to be successful in the past.  Money earned from the fundraiser will be put into boys’ Scout Funds to pay for dues, event fees, camp, and other scouting needs.

Boys will keep 100% of the profits (approximately 30% of the selling price).  Donations of any kind may be accepted; you may account for those in the Military Donation section.

The scout who sells the most products wins the honor of receiving the Golden Man! This award is a pack tradition. The 2nd and 3rd place sellers will receive another pack tradition: the Golden Necklace!  We will also order the prizes available through Trail’s End.

When will we deliver popcorn to people who are ordering it? Popcorn will be available for delivery after Nov. 11.

Collect money when we take order or when order is delivered?  It's up to you when you would like to collect money however, when you place your order with me you will need to pay for all product ordered.

When do popcorn sales end?  All orders and money need to be turned in to me by October 23 (Sunday).

Can we take personal checks?  It’s up to you.  If you know the person well and fully trust that the check will be honored then, yes, you may accept a check (payable to Cub Scout Pack 407)  Otherwise, simply tell them that payments need to be in cash.

What does my scout say?  “Hi, I’m earning money for Cub Scouts.  Would you like to support me in scouting?” Immediately hand them the product picture page.  Always say, “Thank you”, even if they didn’t order.

Should my scout wear his uniform? Yes, he is representing Boy Scouts of America and our pack.

Veteran’s Day
The scouts will be placing flags at Fox Valley Cemetery in Lyons to honor veterans. This is a special event that boys look forward to. Parents and siblings are invited and encouraged to attend.  It is scheduled for the morning of a weekday and we recognize that many parents work at this time.  If you will be unavailable because of work and would like your scout to attend you may arrange for your scout to attend with another scout.  Please dress for the weather.

Volunteers
Would you like an opportunity to help your scout’s pack? We need two parents who can serve as committee members.  Committee members attend a once-a-month meeting to discuss the needs of the pack.  We need these positions filled to help plan a successful program and to renew our charter with Boy Scouts of America.  Talk to Jill if you have questions.

Webelos Woods
Oct. 7 - 8.
$10 – Register by Oct. 3.
Webelos Woods is a fun-filled weekend of camping, outdoor activities, and scouting skills, designed to give Webelos Scouts an in-depth preview of the Boy Scouting experience. Offered by districts throughout the council. You may register by contacting Cindy at the Salem Scout Shop.

Dues
We are trying something new this year. In the past, the pack has kept a percentage of the profits from fundraising to fund activities and events. This year, we are increasing dues but letting scouts keep 100% of the profits.  Dues will be $135 a year.  We collect all of the dues by May so if your family would like to pay monthly you will pay $15 a month (September – May). These monies go directly back to the scouts in the form of handbooks, scarves, awards, den meetings, and events. A small amount is budgeted to pay for office and operation costs.  Scouts may use fundraising profits to pay for dues.  Families may opt out of fundraising and simply pay the dues. Please contact Jill if you have any questions.

Registration 2011-2012
We will collect registration fees ($15/year) this month and next month for new and returning scouts.
